Community Impact and Advocacy: Youth in Foster Care The goal is to maximize the safety the safety and improve the quality of life for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) teens (ages 13-19) in the Northeast Florida Foster Care System or Out of Home Setting. This program promotes safety in the schools and communities through direct safety planning, access to mental health services, youth leadership sessions, and informal mentoring. This program also assists with initiating Gay Straight Alliances in local schools. Youth also have access to support services that help them find housing, employment, and provide them with links to counseling, education, and healthcare. JASMYN supports healthy choices! Youth who want information on safer sex, partner negotiation, healthy relationships, piercing, tattoos, and abstinence can pick-up brochures at the Drop-In-Center or talk with knowledgeable staff, volunteers and peer educators. Youth can also participate in fun educational programs like Peer Educators, SPECTRUM for guys, and engage in discussions about preventing HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections. Condoms, lube and dental dams are also available. JASMYN also offers free anonymous and confidential HIV TESTING. Get tested at JASMYN with Orasure. Orasure tests for HIV antibodies in the mucus membranes of the mouth. No Needles are used. Testing is anonymous which means we do not ask for your name or confidential. Getting tested gives you an opportunity to discuss with a counselor ways that will make you and your partner(s) safer. Information you share with your test counselor is confidential. Test results are usually available in two weeks. Getting tested is one of the most important things you can do to help prevent HIV from spreading. Knowing your HIV status can improve your long-term health by helping you make informed choices today. The GYIL offers a place where you can talk with someone who will be supportive of your issues, open to questions you may have about anything, including sexuality and HIV prevention, and can tell you what's happening or where to turn in Jacksonville. The line is staffed Friday from 4pm-8pm except holidays. You may also be able to speak with staff/volunteers at other times if they are available. The number for the GYIL is 904-389-0089.
