Sex/Health Information

Being sexually active is an important part of most people's lifetime experience, and its important for young people to have accurate and honest information about your rights and responsibilities regarding sexual activity. At JASMYN, we respect your right to be responsible sexual persons. Many youth find it helpful to wait until they have the knowledge, skills, and resources to be safe and responsible in sexual relationships. When it comes to avoiding pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, waiting until you know how to be safe and are with a monogamous partner makes the most sense. And at JASMYN, we know that you don't have to be sexually active to understand or get clear about your sexual orientation. Sexual orientation is about your feelings, attractions and desires, and these are all things you can talk and learn about before you actually have sex. Sex and Sexuality are important topics that JASMYN Peer Educators discuss in their certification training, so if you have any questions at JASMYN, ask a Peer Educator!

Whether you are going to have sex or not right now, we want you to have as much information on it as possible. By reading others’ experiences beforehand, you may get a better idea of what you would and would not like to do in a relationship. and ways to avoid doing anything you don’t want to.  When having any kind of sex, it is so important for it to be SAFE, SANE (not under the influence of drugs/alcohol), AND CONSENSUAL. Remember, you can always come to the JASMYN drop-in center for free condoms and dental dams; they also do anonymous HIV testing (no needles!).
